Portumna
Situated at the northmost point of Lough Derg, Portumna is one of the busier points along the Shannon River.
A bridge spans the river, between Portumna, on the Galway side, and county Tipperary on the other. It opens at regular times each day to allow boats to pass through. Located beside the bridge is the cruiser boat hire firm, Emerald Star, the largest such firm on the Shannon.
The town of Portumna is a lively, medium-sized Irish town with plenty of bars, restaurants, cafés as well as a number of shops and supermarkets. So it's a perfect spot for boaters and campers to stock up on supplies. Other amenities are to be found in the nearby Castle Oaks Hotel including a health club, swimming pool, country club and function rooms.
To the south of the town lies Portumna Forest Park and Portumna Castle. The park is a great place to go for walks and treks, have a picnic, or just to relax and enjoy the scenery. Alongside the castle one can also find the ruins of Portumna Abbey, a perfect example of ancient Celtic archetecture. A little ways down from there is Portumna Castle Harbour. The harbour is usually quite busy during the summer but is a great place to relax and do some fishing on quiet days.
